(Reduced from 4 stars to 1 star.) You have a better chance by making your own: paste cloth-backed sandpaper to a board and cover with open-weave burlap. The burlap on the Emory Cat is so flimsy that there seems no chance of the cat being enticed to scratch.
Originally I gave a 4-star review because everybody said the Emory Cat was unstable, which is not the case if you order the Deluxe upgrade. (Not available here perhaps, but at their website.)
However, I ordered 2 for myself and a neighbor–neither of our cats will scratch this thing. It seems to be another of those “sounds clever” TV-product ideas that is only made to get money out of us, without bothering to make sure their product actually works. Another reviewer here reports that the company making Emory Cat has numerous TV-products of dubious value and an F rating from the Better Business Bureau.
Well we are now going for a refund–stay tuned to this review if you want to know if they actually will give a refund or not!
P.S. Just in case you want to try this thing anyway…
1. ONE COMMENTER SAYS YOU CAN NOW BUY THIS THING AT WALMART. If so, that’s a win-win situation. Walmart takes returns, no problem!
2. Currently, if you go to the website, you can get 2 Emory Cats for $19.95 + $16 s&h. Or 2 “deluxe” models for $29.95 + $16. CAUTION: do not select “2″ in the dropdown menu. That will order 2 sets of 2 = 4. CAUTION: there is no “confirm” screen. I.e., they do not even tell you your order total, until the order is complete. Also, the final screen does not show the order number. This is in the email confirmation. THERE IS NO REASON TO ORDER MORE THAN 1 SET OF 2. You are given no discount for extra sets.
HOW TO GET $10 OFF. Order at the website, not through Amazon. Then right after ordering, see your confirmation email. This gives the order number and a link to cancel the order. If you follow this process, they will offer you $10 discount for not canceling. It worked. My PayPal card was charged only $35.85 total for 2 deluxe models. By the way, I advise using a free one-time-only PayPal Secure Card number for any non-Amazon internet orders. This way, you are immune to being put on some tricky auto-ordering system.
Note. If your cat goes outdoors a lot, you probably should not blunt her claws. A cat has 2 main defenses against dogs and bigger cats:
a. One swift swipe on the nose with razor-sharp talons.
b. Climbing up a tree.
Both of these defenses are blunted if you blunt those claws! So don’t use Emory Cat unless you need it. And in any case NEVER LEAVE YOUR CAT OUT AT NIGHT. Also: FEED ONLY 1/4 OF A SMALL CAN AT A TIME. Then your cat will come in frequently and not wander off into adventures, someday never to return.
With those points in mind, however, please note that Emory Cat (if it works) is not nearly as drastic as the two traditional methods: clipping or de-clawing. Presumably, if it works as advertised, Emory cat will only blunt the claws slightly, so your cat retains some ability to swipe noses or climb trees.

I really thought my cats would love this product, BUT, the only thing they liked was the catnip and the feathery toy attached! They have not scratched on it yet! I’m leaving it out, just in case! Once they’ve scratched my chair so there’s none left, they make scratch on the Emery Cat Board! Wish me luck…

I have five cats and none of them will use the Emery Cat. They liked the feather toy but it did not entice them to use the product. Now I am on the verge of discarding it.

I was very disappointed with this product. My cat’s claws are sharp so I purchased this to dull them. It only made his claws sharper. Not good at all.
